The No.1 Greatest Musical, GREASE, continues to rock 'n' roll around Britain and in March this year, we performed it! It was time to dust off your leather jackets and pull on your bobby-socks and take a trip to a simpler time as 'bad boy' Danny and 'the girl next door' Sandy fell in love all over again. Great performances from a wonderful cast of 70+ with Adam Hunter playing cool ...
50 Years at Monkwearmouth School
We're delighted to share with you our celebration of 50 years of Monkwearmouth School!
Monkwearmouth as a school goes back around 70 years but 50 years ago on 6 February 1962 the “new” school opened at Torver Crescent, Seaburn Dene. This is worth celebrating and has led us to plan a series of activities this year which we invite anybody and everybody who has been involved with the school over the last 50 years to join in. Over the coming months, leading up to our prestigious Awards Evening in September, there will be numerous events and a growing wealth ...

We Will Rock You – And They Did!
Lauren Waine and Adam Hunter as the Killer Queen and Khashoggi in We Will Rock You.
What a show! Three nights and three sell outs, we can't ask more than that. Over fifty students celebrated the music of Freddie Mercury and Queen performing to over a thousand audience members who sang and cheered all night long.
So many hits were performed such as Radio Ga Ga and Somebody to Love with great skill, professionalism and energy. Our thanks and congratulations to everyone involved! This year we are hoping to stage 'Grease' in March, so please watch this space for further ...
Spottee Rap
Following the success of The Cauld Lad of Hylton the summer project in 2009, we were delighted to be given the opportunity to work with Drama Direct Ltd. and screed Direct Ltd., again this summer. We successfully secured funding from Sunderland Council and Seaside Towns, to deliver a two week site specific, multimedia performance, with students from Monkwearmouth and our cluster of six Primary Schools.
We commissioned TV Writer Colin Swash, who writes for Horrible Histories, Mock the Week and Have I got News for you, to write a brand new piece, exclusively for our students! The final performance ...

US Exchange Programme
The US exchange programme continues to prosper. US students have joined our school sharing their lives and learning with our students. Whilst here the American students and staff immersed themselves in North East culture visiting many sites. American and British students alike went on excursions to York, Alnwick, Bamburgh, Lindisfarne, Durham as well as those places closer to home such as St Peter’s church, the National Glass Centre and the Stadium of Light. When not travelling around the area students stayed with homestay families and joined in normal lessons.
The return visit for our students is also ...

Transition Space Project
We were delighted this month to welcome the year 6 students from our cluster primary schools to engage in a Transition Space Project. The children were faced with a scenario of having to plan an evacuation from the planet earth due to a (fictitious) global disaster. Working in mixed groups they were faced initially with the challenge of using their mathematical skills to design pods to transport people, animals and water. The pods were assembled into a prototype spacecraft and calculations were made to work out the capacity of each craft. Some very innovative spacecrafts were created!
Science was the focus ...
GIG
Monkwearmouth School recently hosted a GIG event which featured 4 acts from our school. There were 58 tickets sold which for a first event with minimal publicity was deemed acceptable. The consensus was that the performers were great and that this was the sort of event that the audience would be likely to attend again. The performers themselves enjoyed the experience of actually playing in a realistic setting to an audience that wasn’t part of a ‘school concert’ type event.
The GIG event was a pilot event instigated by Eric Lewis who apart ...
