Japanese Visit

Monkwearmouth Academy was visited on December 10th 2019 by Japanese students of Teikyo University in Durham. This culture visit was to teach approximately 50 of our Year 7 students some basic Japanese language and traditional Japanese cultural activities, such as calligraphy, origami, Japanese costume and chopstick practise. This scheme helps to raise awareness and understanding of other cultures. It is an opportunity to build on communication and interaction skills for our students. Our students represented the academy well and were able to glimpse a part of the world that few of them would have had contact with in the past. Mr Farrier organised the visit and the event was supervised by him, Ms Duff, Ms Simpson, and Mr Spence. Feedback from student voice has been overwhelmingly positive. It is hoped that we can repeat this event later in the academic year (probably Summer) with a cohort of Year 8 students.
